Some days ago I was drinking coffee with a friend who was very excited about her new house and was enjoying like a child the redecoration of her new home. She was so happy and full of joy when, suddenly, she stopped for a moment and said: “i’ve spent hours and hours looking on the Internet and I cannot decide myself. There are so many things that catch my attention!”
I totally agreed with her. Internet is the biggest shop window of the world! So, if you have ever been in this situation, today I’m going to help you to find the light and take the right decisions to have a nice decoration at home and, most important: a coherent one.

1. The style must be defined by your personality
It is true: our house speaks for ourselves and sometimes we are so worried about the impression our house is going to make among our guests that we forget that, before anything, it is our home, our most private space.
For this reason, looking for accessories for our home, we end buying things that we do not use. My first advice is to encourage you to find your own style. Don’t get confused: you don’t have to follow a trend because it appears in decor magazines. First of all, you have to love and accept yourself and how do you live. You have to think about your home as a place which reflects your visual identity: a reflection of yourself, your personality and the result of your daily habits.
Often I wonder about which would be my interior decoration style. I love to see pictures of minimal houses, but I also get excited about spaces or apartments. What it is true is that, actually, I wouldn’t like to live in any of these houses because it wouldn’t be comfortable to live my everyday life.
What I’ve done? I’m not getting frustrated anymore intending that my house follows a trend or another and I’ve accepted that my home is like me. Sometimes, a little crazy: I love to have family or my kids photos at sight and being surrounded by handmade objects that I’ve found in stores, in second-hand markets or online. For me, this details are the ones that make my home cozy. Plants are also a vital necessity in my home.

Let yourself be guided by your instinct. There are objects that immediately get you and say something to you, awakening emotions inside of us. I personally think that being carried along for this emotion is not risky.
For example: I love to discover these little brands from creative people; I’m sensitive to the delicacy of the imperfection and, because of that, their creations are unique and perfect for me. I prefer them rather than commercial products from big brands and stores and I believe they make my house a charming home.
Also, if you buy objects that have this emotional connection with you, this emotion will be transferred into your home: positive emotions that would surround you a big part of the day and would give you peace of mind, making your home your shelter.
3. Choose carefully what you spend your money on
It’s obvious that most of us do not have money to burn. Likewise, I’m sure that sometime you have done a compulsive acquisition only to feel different and, some time later, you regretted it. It happens to all of us. That’s why I tell you that it is much better to buy with conscience not to regret later our impulsive choices when you feel down.
The tip I can give you is that, when you are going to buy, think how much what are you going to use this object, if it is going to be functional inside your home and, although you do not have tons of money, not to focus on the price but in the quality of what you are buying. If it is something you really need, it is better to buy something with quality even it means doing and investment or not buying other things. Once more, what matters is that you are happy. Remember also that you get what you pay for.
Moreover, do not forget the power of your money. When you buy something, you are supporting an economic model or another. Big brands or supporting local businesses and entrepreneurs.
4. Think carefully the material you need and you will be always right
The material a product is made of is not only a synonym of quality, but functionality, hygiene and sustainability. When you are going to buy something, once more, we have to be careful and think about what are the optimal materials and which benefits they can provide us.
One example are the furniture made of fiberboard vs the wood furniture. At the beginning, they may look very similar but, as time passes and you use them, the fiberboard ones began to get bended, the finishes begin to look bad while, if you buy wood, it would be more stable and will remain in perfect conditions for years. Your home, it is designed to last for a long time, isn’t it? If you also have toddlers or you know that your home can get easily dirty, it is very important to be practical: materials like glass, marble for the kitchen or floor tiles instead or parquet flooring can be a far more convenient option. Lastly, we have also to think which materials inspire us and also, what implies to buy them: as I have said before, if you order a door to a carpenter, this door would be unique and, probably, the wood employed to create it would come from more honorable and sustainable resources than an industrial one.
You can also choose sustainable products as the certified woods or the recycled glasses. This way, you are not only contributing to make the world more sustainable, but the material you are going to have at home is telling a story: before it was a tree, but in its place another tree has been planted to keep the forest the same. This lamp was before a glass bottle that, if recycle, it was likely going to end as silicon for road pavement. This little details are the ones that make your house decoration unique.
